How we verify

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: The gift was bought, but the agent made unapproved choices, including an invented phone number that caused shipping problems.

Outcome

A poster asked ChatGPT agent to buy a 4-year work anniversary gift on a $140 budget. It researched and compared well, but abandoned three carts without asking (account required, gift card not found, a form error), unticked marketing emails, made up a phone number that caused shipping issues, chose passwords and rewrote the gift message without consulting him. It finished on a site with guest checkout.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about anything important that's missing below. Keep them quick. Then do the task, checking in with me at the key points.

Goal: Find and buy a gift within budget, checking with me before any account, form or message decisions.

What I can give you (ask for whatever's missing):
- Who it's for and what they like
- Budget and delivery deadline
- Delivery address and my phone number
- Gift message wording

Rules:
- Show me 3 options with total delivered price before buying.
- Ask before creating any account or choosing a password; prefer guest checkout.
- Never invent contact details; use only what I give you.
- Use my gift message word for word.
- If a checkout fails, tell me instead of switching stores.
- If a site asks for a login, a CAPTCHA or payment details, stop and hand control back to me.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: Three options, then a filled checkout for my approval, then the confirmation.

You'll know it worked when: the gift is ordered within budget with my exact details and message.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini opens empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

  • Business Insider's Jordan Hart tried ChatGPT's new Instant Checkout to find their mom a birthday bracelet in sterling silver and gold, with a $400 budget, starting on Etsy. ChatGPT listed seven Etsy options, but with links rather than a buy button, and one was a $2,400 cuff. Asked to show only items it could sell in the chat, it said it couldn't reliably tell from the product data which were eligible, and Skims and Glossier weren't live yet either. Searching other retailers, it found bracelets from brands such as Kendra Scott and Mejuri that fit the brief, though it had to be asked again for direct links. They didn't love any of them and ended with an empty cart.

  • Knowing next to nothing about TVs, Tom's Guide's Alex Hughes told ChatGPT (Thinking mode) he wanted a 43- or 50-inch TV for £300 or less and asked it to question him to narrow things down. He then switched to ChatGPT agent to search the sales; it returned options with links, reasons and discount details plus two cheaper alternatives, and a top pick. He says the whole process took 20 minutes, mostly agent search time while he did other things, and left him with 7 suitable deals.

  • TechRadar's editor-at-large gave ChatGPT (GPT-5), Claude (Sonnet 4.5) and Google AI Mode (Gemini 2.5 Pro) the same Prime Day gift brief: five fun tech gifts under $100, smaller than a bread box, ideally heavily discounted. He found all followed the brief closely; Gemini answered fastest and returned the most varied list and the best breakdown, Claude pulled its picks from TechRadar's own guides, and ChatGPT leaned toward Amazon devices.
