Outcome

After months of vague 'Animal Detected' alerts from his Nest Doorbell, MakeUseOf's Bryan M. Wolfe asked Google Home (with Gemini) 'Hey Google, where is the dog?'. It answered in plain English with a clip: she was near the mailbox and had been there for about five minutes, which told him she wasn't wearing her boundary collar. The feature is part of Google Home Premium, from $10 a month.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Run this task now, exactly as written below. Everything you need is here, so start straight away and only stop if something required is missing or a rule below tells you to.

Goal: Check my home cameras and tell me where my pet is right now and how long it's been there.

Fill in before running:
- Pet name and description: [NAME, BREED, COLOUR]
- Cameras to check: [DOORBELL / YARD / INDOOR]
- Areas the pet shouldn't be: [e.g. front yard, street]

Rules:
- Answer in one sentence with the location and how long, plus the clip.
- If the pet is somewhere it shouldn't be, say so first.
- If you're not sure it's my pet, say so rather than guessing.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: One sentence and the matching clip.

You'll know it worked when: I know where my pet is and whether I need to go get it.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

  • Zachary Thorman's skittish indoor cat, Puff, had slipped out 72 hours earlier without anyone noticing, with nights around 30°F. Thorman had Gemini go through days of Nest camera history. It found a pattern: Puff was coming back to check the door during quiet hours, around 7 AM and after 10 PM. Gemini suggested waiting rather than searching, laying a tuna-broth scent trail and leaving the door cracked; about an hour into waiting, Puff ran inside. Thorman then used Gemini to find local vet availability and book a check-up.

  • Turn rambling notes into a one-page pet-sitter guide for two dogs and a cat with ClaudeRecreated promptEvidence: Screenshots or logsBeginner-friendly

Before a trip, Chris Ivey usually stayed up the night before writing instructions for the pet sitter. This time Ivey gave Claude rambling notes about the two dogs and the cat, and Claude turned them into a clean one-page house-sitting guide covering the feeding schedule, medications, the door code and the vet's details. After a couple of tweaks it was done, and Claude also blurred the personal details so Ivey could share the finished guide publicly.

  • Android Police writer Akshay Bhalla tends to forget where things are put away, which made the yearly deep clean drag. This year Bhalla used Gemini voice commands to save items to Find Hub's 'Remembered' section as they went: passport, tax documents, birth certificates, spare house and car keys, even a tape measure, each with a photo of where it was stored. Asking Gemini 'Where did I put my passport?' brings back the spot and the picture. The cleaning took two hours instead of a full day, though items have to be updated by hand when moved.
