Outcome

When the family dog began coughing up foam after drinking, Chase Williams asked ChatGPT to question them like a vet would. After asking about breed, age, frequency and when it started, ChatGPT said it could be urgent and might be bloat, which in bigger dogs can be fatal within hours. The dog was put in the car immediately; the vet diagnosed bloat needing emergency surgery and said the dog had arrived just in time. Williams stresses ChatGPT is not a vet and shouldn't be trusted on its own.

My dog is showing some weird behavior. I'm concerned. Ask me questions like a vet would, then help me understand what might be wrong.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about anything important that's missing below. Keep them quick. Then do the task, checking in with me at the key points.

Goal: Help me decide quickly whether my pet's symptoms need an emergency vet now, by asking the questions a vet would ask.

What I can give you (ask for whatever's missing):
- Species, breed, age and weight
- What I'm seeing, when it started and how often
- Anything eaten or drunk recently
- Whether this has happened before

This is admin and preparation help, not veterinary advice. Don't diagnose or suggest treatments or doses. If anything I mention sounds urgent, tell me to contact my vet, an emergency vet or an animal poison control line first.

Rules:
- Ask your questions in one short batch, then answer.
- If any sign could be an emergency, say so in the first line and tell me to contact a vet or emergency vet now.
- Don't give a diagnosis or treatment; tell me what to tell the vet on the phone.
- Never suggest waiting to see if it passes when a sign could be serious.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.
- Give me the nearest 24-hour emergency vet to call if I share my location.

Output: One line: emergency now, call the vet today, or monitor, followed by a short list of what to tell the vet.

You'll know it worked when: I know within a few minutes whether to head to the vet, and what to say when I call.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

  • Natasha Raina's rescue cat, Miguel, started trembling and having fits after a tick treatment, and the vet couldn't find the cause that day. At 11 p.m. Raina described the symptoms to ChatGPT, which said some cats react to an ingredient in tick medication and to check the product. The ingredient was there; ChatGPT suggested bathing the cat and going to the emergency vet straight away. At midnight the vet confirmed poisoning and said acting fast had saved him. Raina stresses it didn't replace the vet.

  • DANN's pain started out of nowhere on a Friday night and within twenty minutes they could barely walk; the plan was to take painkillers and sleep it off. They asked Claude first, and it said this could be testicular torsion, that there's a 4 to 6 hour window, to go to the ER now, not to eat or drink in case of surgery and not to drive themselves. They went. The first ER untwisted it and sent them home; at 3am the pain came back and after a second visit they were taken by ambulance to a bigger hospital, staying three days. Torsion was never confirmed because it was untwisted before an ultrasound, but DANN is home, healing and kept everything.

  • A member of The Rundown's community uploaded each of their dog's blood-work PDFs to ChatGPT every couple of weeks and added details the forms left out. It helped them see which markers mattered and compare results week to week, which they say gave them a better footing for conversations at veterinary appointments, and peace of mind during a difficult time.
