Reconcile bank, card and payment-app statements into a family budget with ChatGPT

Outcome

A father of six gave ChatGPT three months of bank transactions, credit-card statements and payment-app exports, which don't reconcile easily in Israel. He says it removed duplicates, broke spending down by vendor and category, separated one-time and business expenses and built a realistic monthly budget, which he then went through with his three oldest kids to decide together where to cut.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Let's work this out together. I'll tell you what I know, you suggest options and ask what you need, and we'll narrow it down step by step. Nothing gets booked, bought or sent until I say so.

Goal: Let's turn our scattered statements into one clear picture of family spending and a realistic budget.

What I'll share as we go:
- Three months of bank, card and payment-app exports (account numbers hidden)
- Household income
- Known one-off or business expenses

Rules:
- Remove duplicates where a card payment also appears on the bank statement.
- Group spending by category and vendor; separate one-off and business items.
- Build a monthly budget from the real averages.
- Make a simple version I can show my kids.
- If a site asks for a login, a CAPTCHA or payment details, stop and hand control back to me.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: A spending summary, a monthly budget, and a kid-friendly one-page view.

You'll know it worked when: every transaction is counted once and the budget matches our real spending.

  • Before moving within Denmark, Vera Termühlen-Enger's family first talked through what each of them needed: school, nature, community, health support, job opportunities, and for their son, a skate park nearby. Only then did they ask ChatGPT to analyse possible cities against those criteria. It suggested 8 places; they crossed 3 off from what they already knew and visited the remaining 5 during the winter holidays, walking around, speaking to schools and talking to people. They chose Odense, a city they hadn't known and probably wouldn't have found without ChatGPT, though the final reasons were the school principal, the atmosphere and the neighbourhood.

  • The Verge's Jay Peters asked Gemini Spark to draft an email to their spouse with the couple's average monthly grocery spending in 2026, without naming the spouse or saying where the budget was; the spreadsheet in Drive doesn't have 'budget' in its name. Spark found the spouse's email address, pulled the monthly grocery totals from the right 2026 spreadsheet (including May's incomplete data), averaged them and put a draft in Gmail that used the spouse's first name and a sign-off the couple use. Jay's reaction: 'Wow, that's actually nuts.' Their wider verdict was that Spark still needs checking and isn't worth the $99.99-a-month plan on its own.

  • Stephanie M. Morrison was hosting family and asked ChatGPT for a menu with a list of criteria: easy, with some store-bought items and a few simple homemade dishes; dishes that could bake at the same time and temperature in a single oven; no nuts, red meat or anything spicy; traditional enough for a crowd; and something picky kids would try. From several options, Morrison chose roasted orange and cranberry chicken with roasted red potatoes with garlic and parmesan, plus store-bought rolls, salad and dessert. ChatGPT said what to start when so everything finished together, and gave a shopping list. It took 5 minutes, and Morrison says it worked perfectly and was a hit.
