Tailor a resume, cover letter and LinkedIn summary with ChatGPT, then get Gemini to judge them

Evidence: Article or interviewA newsletter, journalist or interview account of what happened.

Context: A practice application; no real hiring result.

Outcome

A writer fed ChatGPT a job description and his existing application details to produce a tailored resume (two attempts; the first looked too plain), a one-page cover letter and a LinkedIn summary with recruiter keywords. He then asked Gemini to play the hiring manager: it scored him 8.5 out of 10 with 'a very high probability of landing an interview', but said the documents were too 'tech-first' rather than 'finance-first' for this employer.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Let's work this out together. I'll tell you what I know, you suggest options and ask what you need, and we'll narrow it down step by step. Nothing gets booked, bought or sent until I say so.

Goal: Let's tailor my resume, cover letter and LinkedIn summary to one job, then review them as the hiring manager would.

What I'll share as we go:
- The job description and employer
- My current resume and extra details
- Tone I want

Rules:
- Use only my real experience; never invent jobs, numbers or skills.
- Match the job's requirements point by point in the cover letter.
- Add relevant keywords to the LinkedIn summary.
- Then review the documents as the employer would: score, strengths, and what the employer cares about that's missing.
- If a site asks for a login, a CAPTCHA or payment details, stop and hand control back to me.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: Tailored resume, one-page cover letter, LinkedIn summary and a hiring-manager review.

You'll know it worked when: every requirement in the job ad is addressed, with gaps fixed or noted.

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini opens empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

  • Product manager Amar Saurabh, ex-Meta and TikTok, got only two or three interviews in the first two months of applying, and plain ChatGPT kept giving generic answers and asking for the résumé again. In about an hour and a half Saurabh built a custom GPT, 'PM job search advisor', loaded with their résumé, LinkedIn profile and project details. It drafted recruiter outreach (including 300-character connection requests), tailored the résumé to each job description and prepped each interview. Over two months Saurabh landed at least 7 interviews, with companies including Reddit, Intuit and PayPal, and took a lead product manager job at PayPal.
